Col Smith Six Channel | Free Flight Surfboards
"These are one of the few designs to span decades and still have its place in a modern quiver." - Phil Myers, Free Flight Surfboards Shaper.
The legendary Col Smith was one of the first surfboard shapers to experiment with the modern six channels design. This Newcastle redhead was an elite surfer and took the Hawaii surf scene by storm, winning the 1977 Pro Class Trials at Sunset Beach and the semi finals a week later at Pipeline on this board.
Not only are these boards aesthetically pleasing but the channels function is to assist the board in sticking to the wave whilst allowing it to have less surface area in the tail.
"These boards feel very safe, very secure, not loose at all in the tail ... People think that when you lose a bit more area in the tail they tend to get quite loose but ... with the channels they tend to suck onto the face of the wave much cleaner." - Col Smith, First Creek Films.
Designed for maximum holding ability and grip on the wave. We are lucky enough to be able to collaborate with Phil Myers from Free Flight Surfboards to bring you the Col Smith channel bottom design in carbon surfboard construction.
